Best Cheap Companies To Own In Right Now

Check out this week’s Danger Zone Interview with Chuck Jaffe of Money Life and MarketWatch.com.

Specialty chemicals producer Ashland Inc. (NYSE: ASH) is in the Danger Zone this week. Those that consider ASH a “value” stock at ~$95/share are mistaken. The stock is cheap by traditional metrics such as price to earnings, but a closer look reveals the value to be an illusion. Hidden non-operating income artificially inflates reported earnings while serious liabilities are buried in the footnotes. The stock is actually terribly expensive, and I do not believe Ashland could ever achieve the profit growth expectations embedded in its valuation. .

Misleading Earnings

Investors looking only at GAAP net income might think that 2013 was a great year for ASH. After all, the company increased its reported earnings from $26 million in 2012 to $683 million in 2013. However, that gain is an illusion as the increase comes from actuarial gains from ASH’s pension plan.

In 2013, ASH recorded an actuarial gain of $532 million on its pension and postretirement plans. This gain was due primarily to the company increasing the discount rate on its projected benefit obligation by a full percentage point.

    Tuesday's Volume: 6.73 million
    Three-Month Average Volume: 3.66 million

That trade will hit if CPST manages to take out Tuesday's intraday high of $1.23 to its recent gap-down-day high of $1.30 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CPST as long as it's trending above its recent low of $1.11 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 3.66 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then CPST will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.42 to $1.45, or even $1.55 to $1.60.

In the investing world, boring businesses don't get much attention. The financial media obsesses over the next hot stock, preferring to ignore the seemingly sleepy companies that generate reliable profits year after year. Some of the high-quality companies that fly under the radar are pure industrials, such as Emerson Electric (NYSE: EMR  ) , Dover (NYSE: DOV  ) , and Illinois Tool Works (NYSE: ITW  ) .

    AeroVironment (NASDAQ: AVAV  )
Shifting over the implications of this news for automotive investments, the key attraction for AeroVironment investors (aside from selling UAVs into an Afghan war that's winding down) has been the company's "PosiCharge" electric-car battery recharging technology. AV says it beats all comers with the ability to recharge a lithium ion battery pack in mere minutes. But if Khare's invention bears fruit, and battery recharge times begin getting measured in seconds, AV's raison d' etre could vanish.
